Shifting agriculture is a form of agricultural system which involves the clearing of land by people, then the land is cultivated temporarily.
After the temporal cultivation, the land is left to revert to its natural vegetation to regain its fertility. Hence, one moves or shifts to another fertile land to preserve soil fertility.
Subsistence agriculture, on the other hand, refers to a situation where farmers grow food crops such as maize, cereals, and vegetables or keep livestock to meet their daily needs.
Subsistence agriculture usually aims at providing local requirements for the family with little no surplus for sale or trade.

Subsistence farming simply implies producing enough food and fiber for the needs of the farmer and his family. Shifting cultivation is also a primitive form of agriculture, although there is no reason why it should only support subsistence farming.
