All dairy farms must meet state and federal standards for manure storage, handing and recycling per guidelines from state and federal agencies. Dairy farmers recycle manure according to detailed nutrient management plans that help conserve soil and protect local streams, rivers and estuaries like the Chesapeake Bay. For example, a manure management system on Mercer Vu farms allows the farm to maintain their high standard of cow comfort while protecting the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Cow manure is used to fertilize crops, part of a sustainable cycle that allows dairy farmers to make nutritious foods available to people.

Farmers also use many other best management practices such as no-till farming, energy conservation and streambank protection. For example, E-Z Acres and Rainsford Farms were recently highlighted as environmental stewards by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy.

Dairy farmers hold to strict environmental standards.
Dairies follow regulations from agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), state departments of agriculture and local governments.
Dairy farms must submit and follow detailed manure recycling plans specific to each dairy. These plans are continually updated to reflect new technologies and meet new regulations.
Dairy farms must obtain special environmental permits that hold them accountable for waste management practices and the number of animals on their land.
State and federal employees regularly perform both scheduled and surprise inspections.

Yes. Dairy farmers live and work on their farms, so it’s important for them to protect the land, water and air for their families, their surrounding communities and future generations.
All dairy farms must meet the standards for manure storage, handling and recycling set out for them by their state and by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Caring for the environment is a responsibility dairy farmers share with their local community.
Good environmental practices are essential to a dairy farm’s success and leave a positive legacy for future generations.
