Primordium initiation takes place in the trunk of the coconut palm and it takes some time to appear on the crown. Once it appears on the palm usually it takes another twelve months to mature, Water stress or nutrient stress may delay the appearance of spathe.

Under favorable conditions, Tall coconut palms start flowering after planting for five years (three years for Dwarf), while the fruit fully ripens after 11-12 months. Usually, only 30-40% of the fruits are carried to full term, while most are aborted within three months of pollination.

On fertile soil, a tall coconut palm tree can yield up to 75 fruits per year, but more often yields less than 30. Given proper care and growing conditions, coconut palms produce their first fruit in six to ten years, taking 15 to 20 years to reach peak production.

It is estimated that about 44 months are needed for the spadix primorida to develop into a bunch of coconut. In coconut, leaves are produced spirally (2/5). Spadix forms in the leaf axil, which means, if a leaf does not develop, an entire spadix is also lost. The time estimated from leaf primordial initiation to its emergence is 30 months. Sometimes, an entire spiral (5 leaves) may be lost due to prolonged moisture stress. If you can ensure moisture and other inputs, these events take place normally. Varieties have only minor effects on the timing of these events.

It takes about 30-34 months for the inflorescence to develop from the initiation to the opening of the spathe. The spadix is stout and erect, enclosed by the tough spathe which splits when inflorescence is mature. This varies from variety to variety and agroclimatic conditions.
