Since chia absorbs a lot of liquid, it can lead to stomach cramps. Hence the need to consume sufficient liquid when consuming chia.

Chia is actually a member of the mint family and native to Mexico. Chia seeds are consumed like whole grains, but they’re a pseudo-grain. That means they’re the carbohydrate-rich seeds of a nongrass plant. When chia seeds encounter liquid, they expand and form a thick gel.

Chia seeds were said to be a staple of Aztec and Mayan diets but were later banned because of their ritualistic religious use. Over the last century or so, they’ve enjoyed a minor following but recently made a comeback on the market as a potential superfood.

One of the simplest ways to include chia seeds in your diet is to add them to water. To make chia water, soak 1/4 cup (40 grams) of chia seeds in 4 cups (1 liter) of water for 20–30 minutes. To give your drink some flavor, you can add chopped fruit or squeeze in a lemon, lime, or orange.

Weight Loss: Chia seeds contain high amounts of soluble fibre. This is what enables chia seeds to absorb 10-12 times weight in water, giving them gel-like consistency. Drinking chia seed water can increase the feeling of fullness, slow down the absorption of food, thus making you eat fewer calories and aiding weight loss.
