A subsistence farmer in a poor country without an off-farm income has no money to buy anything that can’t be grown on the farm. They might barter or raise a small cash crop to pay for clothes, basic tools, other small cheap items – but what happens if they get sick and need expensive medical care? If they have a large family and more than one child wants to carry on being a farmer, how do they purchase more land? If any of their children wants an education leading to a career in the city, how do they fund that?

The big problem we face is a lack of support and understanding. We have access to government funded health care, but we may not have anyone we can ask to help look after the farm while we recover from illness. And while we have a depth of wisdom saying “The family farm works when the family works the farm,” there is no shortage of petty officials ready to be outraged at the idea of the kids helping on the farm.

These major problems include the lack of climate information, illiteracy, awareness problem, fertilizers and funding problems, poor agricultural and weather extension services and difficulties in accessing official information.
