any of an order (Coniferales) of mostly evergreen trees and shrubs having usually needle-shaped or scalelike leaves and including forms (such as pines) with true cones and others (such as yews) with an arillate fruit.

Conifers are mostly evergreen trees or shrubs with scale-like leaves or needles and seed-bearing cones. Usually problem-free, cold-hardy, drought resistant, low maintenance, conifers are prized by gardeners for their ornamental value. Providing year round color and interesting texture, they come in all shapes and sizes and make effective groundcovers, beautiful hedges, and ideal focal points. Some can be grown in containers or even as bonsai. They all are terrific additions to the landscape.

Conifers are a group of cone-bearing seed plants, a subset of gymnosperms. Scientifically, they make up the division Pinophyta, also known as Coniferophyta or Coniferae. The division contains a single extant class, Pinopsida. All extant conifers are perennial woody plants with secondary growth.
