Shifting cultivation is preparing ground in a large plot or area and captivatingly mostly food grains and vegetables fruits etc till the soil fertility is lost. Then the field is burnt and cultivation shifted to another place or area. The system is practiced in Africa and NE area in India ,parts of Kerala and AP.Tribals do this type of cultivation.
The advantage is soil fertility is completely utilized at particular area and cost effective. But this creates a lot of ecological damage and environmental change.

Shifting cultivation is a low-input system of arable farming that is practice in large areas of the humid and sub-humid tropics. The major characteristics of shifting cultivation are summarized and briefly examined. The main features of shifting cultivation cycle in forest and savanna lowlands of the tropics as well as the specific variants of the system are described. The different forms of shifting cultivation described include slash-and-burn type of shifting cultivation, the chitons system, the Hmong system, shifting cultivation cycle in the Orinoco floodplain, the slash-mulch system, and the plough-in-slash system.
