Improperly managed agricultural activities may impact surface water by contributing nutrients, pesticides, sediment, and bacteria, or by altering stream flow. Fertilizer and pesticide use, tillage, irrigation, and tile drainage can affect water quality and hydrology.
Irrigation impacts on surface water quality
In addition to problems of waterlogging, desertification, salinization, erosion, etc., that affect irrigated areas, the problem of downstream degradation of water quality by salts, agrochemicals and toxic leachates is a serious environmental problem.
As surface water is exposed to all elements of nature, and water has a tendency to dissolve or take away a part of everything it touches, the main water quality issues for surface water tend to be color and turbidity. Keep in mind, just because water is visibly clear DOES NOT mean that it is.
