There is no perfect size, just pull when they are big enough to suit you. For full-sized bulbs, let onions grow and mature. They are ready to harvest when the bulbs are big and the tops begin to turn yellow and fall over. Pull them up, shake off the soil, and lay them out to cure with the tops still attached.

when the bulbs start to fatten up, you can begin harvesting individual onions as needed. In late summer or early fall, the leaves on your onion plants will start to flop over. This happens at the “neck” of the onion and it signals that the plant has stopped growing and is ready for storage.

Onions are ready to harvest when the foliage starts to turn yellow and topple over. For September-planted sets, this will be from June, and for spring-planted sets, it will be from late summer to early autumn.
